The September Free Play is over, and we have a winner. The winner is none other then anupsanju. Congrats on winning a sealed copy of Astro Boy: The Omega Factor. We’ll get that shipped out to you ASAP.
Now it’s onto the October Free Play. This month we’ve changed things up a bit. First, we’re only giving away games we’ve featured on Substance TV as we only want to give away the best. Second, not only can you enter here on the site and on YouTube, we thought it only fair that our fans and supporters over at RetroWare TV get a shot at entering the contest. So now you can post a response to the October Free Play thread and be entered into the contest as well. Plus, you can have up to three entires. This means you can enter here, YouTube, and over at RetroWare TV. Of course you can enter just here, or just here and YouTube, but the more places you enter, the better chance you have to win. All three websites are free to sign up giving everyone an equal and fair chance.
This month we’ve got quite a prize package. Since I’ve leaked this news elsewhere, I’ll let you know we’re doing an exhastive comparison of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat for the Gamecube, and Donkey Kong Jungle Beat for the Wii. So, we’re not only giving you a brand new copy of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat for the Gamecube, with game and Kongas, we’re also giving away a brand new sealed copy of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat for the Wii. Although I won’t tell you which one is better, this will give you the chance to find out for yourself for free.
The rules are simple, we want you to tell us your favorite version of any video game. Did you like the Gamecube, PS2, Wii, or PC version of Resident Evil 4 best? Did you like the Dreamcast, Saturn, Gameboy Advance, Playstation 1, PSP, or PS2 version of Street Fighter Alpha 3 best? Whatever game it is, tell us which version was the best, and most importantly why. Were the graphic better, was the gameplay more solid, was the loading quicker, or was the music better? Whatever it was, we want to know.
You have until October 31st at 11:59 (CST) to enter the contest. Best of luck and thanks to everyone who participated. We’re glad to help out the community and happy to see so many folks involved. Alright then, get to it.

I really like Viewtiful Joe for the PS2 over the GC version. I liked that version best because it had Dante from Devil May Cry as a playable character and he was by far the? best character due to his jumping pistols attack. Also having all those extra characters and difficulties really made it a fun experience.

Winds of Thunder (Japanese version of Lords of Thunder)? for PC Engine over the Sega CD version because it has better sound effects, no slowdown, and I like the PC Engine controllers much more than Sega’s Genesis/Sega CD controllers.
Even though it took a graphical downgrade, I prefer Resident Evil 4 on the PS2. I liked playing it on the DualShock 2 and the extra costume option that gave Ashley the armor made playing on Professional less of a pain in the ass. :3
I really like Street Fighter 3rd Strike for the Dreamcast since they only have 1 arcade in my area… and it’s 45 minutes away… and they only have Soul Calibur 2 as far as fighting games go.
Having it at home on my Dreamcast made it A LOT more accessible for me rather than the Arcade Version(s).
The SNES version of Turtles in Time. I figure? everyone know why, but the extra levels, the fantastic SNES sound effects (especially the music for “Big Apple 3 AM” and the extra bosses- it all came together in the best beat-em-up ever made.
I like it better than the arcade, better than Hyperstone Heist on the Genesis and better than the remake for the PSN and Live Arcade.

Hey there, I’m taking a shot at this free play contest. You may have seen me as deathsceane at youtube, so you should know what I’m going to talk about. I prefer the GameCube version of LoZ: Twilight Princess. Its not because of the graphics or how solid the gameplay is, Its a more sentimental reason. This was pretty much the last game for the GameCube and in a sence I feel it should’ve stayed a GC exclusive. I’m not bad mouthing the Wii version, but I just feel that the GC LoZ:TP was more true. Aside from the control differances they’re pretty much the same game only the Wii version is just quite literaly a mirror image. In the end it all comes down to my geekness, and as a bit of a gaming geek I prefer my Links south pawed.
Hmm recently i played the remaked version of Final fantasy 4 for the DS and i find that version far superior and far more fun that its classic version for the SNEs or its remake for the other systems. I mean obvious reasons being the 3d graphics but the addition to the add skills and stuff make it even more awesome
Final Fantasy 1 – Ah the classic roleplaying game that started a massive franchise. The series has had it’s ups and downs over the years, but the classic is the one that started it all. First starting on the NES/Famicon, it started with a MSX2 port, followed by a repacking on the Famicon with Final Fantasy II – these were all ports in some fashion or another, but then came the Wonderswan Color, and the first remake of Final Fantasy 1, then came the Playstation 1 Final Fantasy Origins, and the Gameboy Advance Final Fantasy 1 and 2 Dawn of Souls, and then on mobile phones in japan… However, my favorite version of this classic game is the PSP version, re-released for a third time, this version features crisp high res sprites – monsters and characters alike are now in a much higher sprite resolution, and the widescreen presentation really adds to the game in a big way, and the music really immenses you in the enviroment and situation. There’s some noticeable new effects, like fog as well.
The wii version of Residen evil 4. Mostly because it’s the only version i’ve really tried. I watched my friend play the pc version but it’s rather bad because you don’t aim with the mouse. The wii controlls on the other hand are great. The wiimote makes it really easy to aim and the motion controlls are great. Don’t forget the graphics too. I believe the wii version has the best graphics too.
Mortal Kombat for the Sega Genesis was my preferred version at the time simply because the gore was left intact via a code. Sure the SNES version had better graphics and sound but Nintendo’s strict family friendly policy ruined it for that version. Thankfully Nintendo stopped being so strict just in time for MKII and I went with the SNES version of that!
The Sega Genesis version of Mortal Kombat. This version’s controls are more accurate to the arcade with the six button controller, and how well the control works is what I look for in a game. Yeah, the graphics weren’t the best, but if I want that I can go to the arcade.
Fatal Fury – Neo-Geo vs. Genesis vs. Super NES
Back in the day I, like a lot of people, couldn’t afford the costly Neo-Geo AES. So we were instead playing ports of SNK games that were pretty good, but still had their problems.
Since at that time all I had was a SNES, I was okay with that version until I saw the Genesis version. That version let you choose from any character in vs. mode where only player two was allowed to do so in the SNES version. An odd decision for the developers to make to be sure.
Another problem with the SNES version was the controls being too stiff. Pulling off special moves was one hell of a chore.
Of course the arcade perfection of the Neo-Geo version can’t be overlooked. I finally played it again last year on the PSP via SNK Arcade Classics Volume 1. The vs. mode in the original only allows for the main three characters to be chosen, but the controls were spot on and beating the game on every difficulty doesn’t hurt either.
The winner: Fatal Fury on Neo-Geo
I going to go with Sparkster on the Sega Genesis. Now, don’t get me wrong I do enjoy the Super Nintendo version of it as well. It has great graphics and sound, and the level design is great. However, The Sega Genesis version has a few things that the Super Nintendo version doesn’t. For one, on the SNES version, you have to charge your rocket pack via a button press. However on the Genesis version it is automatic. Also on the Genesis version you have the ability to upgrade your sword to a flame sword which is pretty awesome. Finally, the Genesis version has the awesome intro sequence which sees Sparkster battling Axel Gear in a mech. Either way, great game!
I love Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter on the Saturn. It’s an excellent port of the arcade version (with noticeable but acceptable loading times), and the Saturn controller’s d-pad and button layout is perfect for it. The PS1 verion has inferior graphics, has some slowdown, and doesn’t even fully implement the tag team feature because the system can’t handle it. The arcade version is great but doesn’t have as many options and modes as the Saturn version.
There are alot of games I could list but my favorite is also my most controversial… Metroid Prime for the wii. Everyone has a game that resonated with them. For me, it was Retro Studios first outing. No other game immersed me as fully as this. There was an attention to detail that I’ve never seen before. Now, I am disappointed that some of the effects are missing and if it was only for the bloom lighting..bad call, nintendo.. But ever since playing corruption it has been my dream to be able to replay it with the motion controls. You really do get to appreciate the level design better making the most immersive game i’ve ever played that much more immersive. Yes, the gun effects missing are a sore spot but the experience is next to none.
My favorite version of Resident Evil 4 is the PS2 version. Doesn’t look QUITE as good as the GC version, but the great extras, modes, and AWESOME 1930s Gangster Leon was worth the double dip.
I first played Okami on the PS2 at a friend’s and enjoyed the few hours I got to play.
Later, I got the Wii version and I thought it would be better ’cause of the more intuitive brush controls, which are awesome and all, but the gesture-based combat wasn’t that good as it some times wouldn’t pick up.
Regardless of that issue, I got through the game cause the experience is just great. But if I had to choose a version, it? would be the PS2 one thanks to the more responsive combat.
