After hearing months ago about the Castlevania’s epic return to a 2D non-Metroidesque action game, I couldn’t help but be excited. I would hear sparse rumors about a release date, but nothing confirmed. I was more than surprised to wake up this morning to find Castlevania is upon us with no hype or fanfare before its release. OMG!
First off, I love the Wiiware and virtual console service. Downloading new games and ones from years past is a good thing. However, the one thing that (use Peter Griffin voice) “grinds my gears” is that Nintendo does not give out release dates for games released weekly. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one surprised that Castlevania came out.
Enjoy this great title today for 10 measly greenbacks. You’ll be glad you did. Consider this article the fanfare the title deserved.

I dunno about the other Rebirth games, although from what I hear, Contra Rebirth is great and Gradius Rebirth is decent. Not saying that’s the truth, that’s just what I hear from around the ‘net. Unfortunately, I can confirm that Castlevania The Adventure Rebirth is kinda mediocre. It is really simple, kinda like Castlevania I & the Game Boy Castlevanias. That’s not a problem in itself, but without much challenge, it becomes quite dull. It doesn’t even have the refinement of the 16-bit Castlevania games. This is my least favorite Retrovania besides the Game Boy ones, which I haven’t played.
@Erik
No, I’ve never played it, but I did do a Youtube search for it and it looks awesome. It really reminds me of Konami’s X-Men arcade game (which may use the same Arcade board). In either case, it would be great to see that get a “Rebirth” as well. As far as I know, it’s an original IP, so it shouldn’t have any trademark problems…
You got it! Sunset Riders YES!
Yeah we would love to cover the Rebirth games, because they have all been great. The only thing I found lately on the web was a few possible pics of Jackal Rebirth. Hmmmm…
TMNT would be great, if it wasn’t for that damn Ubisoft. Hey question. Did you ever play a game called Metamorphic Force? Another great beat-em-up from Konami. Ahh the possibities…
I love it. The music is excellent, as are the graphics and game play. So, Konami has blessed us with Gradius Rebirth, Contra Rebirth, and now Castlevania Rebirth. So, what’s next? I’m hoping for either a Turtles in Time Rebirth, or Sunset Riders Rebirth. I honestly believe that Sunset Riders has a better chance of returning than TMNT, as I believe that Ubisoft still owns the license. Oh and Erik, coverage of the Rebirth games on Substance TV would be awesome! Keep up the good work guys!
There will be a very good chance of it. We always like to cover the games that get shoved under the rug. The first one I’d like to cover would be Gradius, then Contra and then Castlevania.
It could be awesome, I really love classic Castlevania games. Would make it into any incoming substance episode?
