Anarchy Reigns Japanese Launch Trailer Impressions

It’s no secret I kind of like Platinum Games. Alright I’m a bit obsessed. Hang around me for more than 5 second and you’ll hear me lavishing praise on Bayonetta and its’ many wonders. Followed that with my raging e-boner for the upcoming Metal Gear Rising Revengeance and you might think Platinum Games can do no wrong in my rose colored eyes.

Oh but one soon to be released game by the name of Anarchy Reigns stopped me from completely boarding the Platinum Game hype train. Now this wasn’t for lack of trying. The trailers for the game floored me. The character design, look, feel, sound, and everything about the trailer oozed that tasty Platinum goodness I’ve come to know and love. Though I was still concerned. As amazing as the game looked, I wasn’t so sure how it would play. Would it be co-op, versus, team, one player, battle royale, or what? We’ve seen Platinum create stunning lightening quick third person action games, but those were one player. Could they create balance in a game with a boatload of characters who controlled as slick and quick as say Bayonetta?

At least some of those lingering questions have been answered now that Platinum has released a launch trailer for the Japanese release of the game (which goes by Max Anarchy over there).

This is the first time I’ve seen concrete details on all the gameplay modes. To my relief there seems to be a ton of options. Here’s a rundown of all the modes featured in the trailer:

- Deathmatch (1 vs 1 vs 1 vs 1)
- Tag Battle (2 vs 2 vs 2 vs 2)
- Team Battle (4 vs 4)
- Cage Match (1 vs 1)
- Capture the Flag (4 vs 4)
- Death Ball (4 vs 4)
- Survival (3 vs CPU)
- Battle Royale (16 player free for all)

My first read of the game is a mix of Bayonetta with hints of Power Stone. Third person versus but with weapons and items scattered throughout the battle field. There are also some vehicles, helicopters, and beasts to be commandeered in your quest for mayhem.

Also featured was a snippet of the single player mode. How all of these characters mash up together in one unified story line is unclear to me. Seeing how this is Platinum Games you better believe if nothing else it’s going to be weird and off beat.

This trailer has got me more pumped about the game. I might not be as jazzed as I am for Metal Gear Rising Revengeance (don’t know if you heard about it SQUUEEEE!) but I will be buying it day of simply for the fact it is Platinum Games and I want to play it for myself first hand to see if they pulled it off. We’ll all get a chance when it’s released later this year on July 7, 2012. For more details, check out Platinum Game’s website.
