Caine’s Arcade: A 9 year old’s Cardboard Dream

At first glance Caine Monroy seems like your normal 9 year old boy. During summer break he would spend his days at his father’s used auto parts store. Then one day a magic mixture of boredom, cardboard, and imagination spawned a simple yet grand idea: a cardboard arcade machine. As time went on, one machine turned an elaborate cardboard arcade inside his dad’s used auto parts store.

But Caine dreamed of sharing his emporium of pressed board with others. So he spent countless hours working on his arcade hoping the day would come when lots of customers would visit his arcade. His father’s auto parts store didn’t get much foot traffic. This made Caine’s hope of having an arcade full of patrons seem unlikely. Though like any good entrepreneur he pressed on. The video below is a documentary about Caine’s corrugated journey. As a father and long time lover of arcade, this was inspiring. The American arcade may be dead, but this video prove its’ spirit and social impact is still relevant today.
