Road Rules for Reviewers

Posted by Brian On September - 3 - 2010

So you want to know what makes a good review show, podcast, or blog? Oh, you don’t? Well I’ve spent hours over a hot stove cooking up this batch of ideas, so you sit down and listen! In the three years since I started doing reviews, I’ve learned a lot. Some through seeing what others have done, and some from personal experience. Now I don’t pretend to have it all figured out, but I want to pass along a few tips when it comes to being a quality reviewer. Whether written, spoken, or video, these pointers apply to all. I hope you find this advice helpful. (BTW: This list is in no particular order)

Reviewing with a cam’s eye

Posted by Brian On November - 8 - 2009

Ohhh ohhh I wanna look like a tool

Now you are probably wondering what this is all about. Well it’s more like who, not what. Cam’s Eye View, hence the reasoning for the picture, is a video game blog about video games by a guy named, you guessed it, Cam. At the moment, he has over 100 reviews covering everything from old to new. He’s got a wide and varied taste covering all sorts of consoles with good perspectives on the games, and he even brings up some interesting points along the way. Best of all, he’s just an average guy writing honest reviews about video games. He’s in the process of re-writing his reviews to add more details and make them even better. Check him out!

Note: I was looking for an appropriate picture for this article, so I searched for the words “camera eye” and this was on the first page. She looks like a tool. Why would anyone wear that?

Typing about TypingBlank

Posted by Brian On July - 31 - 2009

I have no more typing puns

Let’s be honest, when it comes to video game reviews, there is a lot of crap. Whether it’s IGN or just some random guy from the internet, quality game reviews are hard to find. That’s the whole reason I started Substance TV. Since then, I’ve actively searched out to find other reviewers who put our quality reviews. Sadly I usually come up empty handed.

A few days ago, I received a message from a Youtube users who goes by the name of “TypingBlank”. He had posted a comment on my YouTube channel, and at the end he made a comment stating he did reviews as well. Yea sure, I had heard that before. But with a glimmer of hope, I clicked anyway. What I found was something amazing. Here was a guy who looked to be maybe in his late teens, but nothing about his reviews are juvenile or childish. He has come great production values which can be seen in his titling, animation, and video capture. Then there’s his voice over, which again, sounds professional, clean, and crisp. I could tell there was some real thought and scripting behind what he said. All in all, I was flat out shocked and impressed.

So, since Substance TV is a show dedicated to showing only the best in games, why not showcase the best in video game reviewers? He has reviews for some of the newer games released (inFamous, Dead Space, and Sonic Unleashed). So do yourself a favor and go check him out.
