Free Play: Viewtiful Joe 2

Posted by Brian On August - 1 - 2009

Captian Blue was such a poser

Right now, the economy pretty much sucks a big left one. And we all know about the government’s stimulus packages and other various attempts to try and ease the pain of this recession blah blah blah. Here at Substance TV, we want to do our little part, but in a different way. Both Erik and I know video games are a luxury item. It’s not the cheapest hobby, but we’re suckers for those pretty pixels. When recession hits, the old video game budget shrinks considerably.

So starting this month, Substance TV is rolling out what we call “Free Play”. Free Play is a monthly contest. Each month we’ll pick out a game and give it away for free. Now we’re not talking about some crappy throw away title. As with our reviews, we only pick the best. The Free Play for the month of August is a new sealed copy of Viewtiful Joe 2 for the Nintendo Gamecube.

Viewtiful Joe 2

How do you enter it you ask? It’s quite simple. All you have to do is post a comment in response to this article. Tell us your favorite memory of the Viewtiful Joe series, or best level, or thing you liked best about the game, or if you haven’t played it, what you think about the series in general. Long story short, if it’s a comment pertaining to Viewtiful Joe, it’s fair game. At the end of the month, we’ll randomly select one winner (and don’t worry, we’ll handle shipping as well), and send you the game.

That’s it! So get to it and stay Viewtiful.

I never actually beat the first one, I could never beat the Magnificent Five.

Awesome game though and it’d give me motivation to beat the first one if I won this somehow.

Never played the GameCude, was happy with my PS2 but since I got the Wii I’ve been cherry picking titles from the back catalogue, I really recommend Eternal Darkness.

Ive never played Viewtuful Joe, so this would be a great opportunity. From what I have seen, Viewtiful Joe looks awesome, and my friends say it IS awesome! So my thought on this, is that one day I hope I can play this game.

My favorite memory with the Viewtiful Joe series is when I got a demo disc in the mail a couple months after signing up for this Playstation 2 Clubby thing. The demo disc contained a few game demos, such as We Love Katamari, I Ninja, and such, but the game I liked most on the demo was Viewtiful Joe. I must have beat that demo at least 3 times before I turned my PS2 off.

The next day, I go to play some Final Fantasy X. I had probably put at least 3 to 5 actual days into leveling up my characters to face the final boss that week before I got the demo disc. Anywho, I go to play it, and realize that there are no save files… Everything was blank. I reset my PS2 and go to the browser screen to look at my Memory Card. No data at all… Then, my Mother tells me I got a letter in the mail. The letter read as follows:

“CONSUMER ALERT: HOLIDAY 2004 DEMO DISC GLITCH

If you have received a copy of the Holiday 2004 Demo Disc including the playable Viewtiful Joe 2 – please take note.

It has just been brought to our attention that there is a glitch in this demo which will erase all of your saved files from your Memory Card(s). If you have not yet played the Viewtiful Joe 2 demo, please remove your Memory Card(s) from your PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system before you load the Holiday 2004 Demo Disc.

Sony Computer Entertainment America would like to express our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you. “

Viewtiful Joe is a cool character overall. I enjoyed the first game because it had style! It’s been ages since I last played though…I never got around to getting the sequel…

I’ve watched my kid brother play the first one on the gamecube a while back. I liked the slowing down fastforwarding aspects of the puzzles of this great platformer. I think it would be great if I got Viewtiful Joe 2 to play on the wii i just got lol. I don’t have many games for it yet.

    Memories about Viewtiful Joe?

    1 word : Belly Button.

And you know who i’m talking about!

  • ancientflounder

Awesome, I get to post after a spam-bot!

I gotta say, I’m in the same boat as Jango; I’ve tried playing the first one and I just can’t seem to not suck at it. Kinda frustrating, really.

I never got to play either of the games, but always wanted to do so. The same with Clover’s other game Okami. I did get a chance to play as him in TvC tho if that counts.

best part of Veiwtiful Joe, he’s in Tatsunoko vs Capcom

Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble is one of those games I had fun with for a bit, but never went back to it. I even went so far as to unlock everything and every character. It would be more enjoyable if you had three other people who really knew how to play the game. Otherwise it’s just you and the computer.

Plus Power Stone just trounces that game to pieces so I play it instead.

While I’ve never played either of the main Viewtiful Joe games, I’ve always been interested in doing so. I’ve watched my brother play the first game and seen a live stream of the second game via Justin.tv from an admin of Backloggery.com.

I have played Viewtiful Joe: Red Hot Rumble, but I felt pretty let down by that game.

I think that Viewtiful Joe 2 will show me what a good game in the series is like. :)

I actually own the original Viewtiful Joe on the Gamecube but have never played the second. With that said, my favorite memory of Viewtiful Joe is the first time I’d ever seen it in action. I was hanging out with some of my High School buddies a couple of years back, when my friend Darrell busted out Viewtiful Joe. It had just come out and he was pretty anxious to show it off. Well, after seeing the VFX powers (my favorite being slow mo’ and watching my friend punch a bullet) and admiring the games quirky sense of humour (Hulk Davidson asks Joe if he’s supposed to be “some kind of Megaman or something) I knew I had to have it. Great series that will hopefully continue on the new consoles…

I have to say beside the fact that Todd looks like Joe, my favorite thing about the Viewiful Joe series is the music. I never got very far in the first game (because it’s hard and I APPARENTLY suck at video games) but that music just rocks. One of my favorite thing about Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is the simple fact that they used Veiwtiful Joe’s theme music. Now that’s just flippin’ icing on the cake to an already amazing fighter.
